Homemade Fingerpaint

We're feeling a bit under the weather at the Adams house today, so I thought I would share our recipe for fingerpaint instead of a craft. Hopefully everyone will be feeling well again soon so that we can share a few fall projects!

Ingredients:
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
cold water
1/2 cup cornstarch
4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid
food coloring
4 to 6 wide mouth jars

Directions:
1. Stir the gelatin into 1/3 cup cold water; set aside.
2. Measure the cornstarch into a saucepan and stir in 2 1/2 cups cold water until dissolved.
3.Bring the mixture to a simmer and stir until thickened.
4.Remove the pan from the heat and blend in the gelatin mixture and the dishwashing liquid.
5. Allow the mixture to cool and spoon it into jars.
6.Stir in a generous amount of food coloring.
7. Store at room temperature in airtight containers.

  6. Amy,
I'm not sure what would happen if you used flavored gelatin, but I bet it would smell great! I say go for it!

  7. Hi,

What does the dishwashing liquid in this mixture? What do you think, is it absolutely necessary? Because without it the paint'd be eatable.. (For my one year old, who take everything in her mouth..)

  8. Did you find that cornstarch based paints separate? We mix shaving cream with a dab of tempera, makes for a terrific finger paint. Here's an example of my kids fingerpainting (not that you care, but I love to brag) http://quirkymomma.com/2009/painting-with-feathers/

  9. Rachel- I have never had my paints separate before, that's actually what I like about these paints! We have used shaving cream based paints before too! They are fun! Thanks for sharing!
